Slain Hamas chief laid to rest in Qatar

Doha: The body of slain Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was buried in Qatar last night.

His body was buried in Lusail, a northern suburb of Doha after funeral prayers at the country’s main mosque attended by thousands.

Haniyeh, who played a leading role in talks that led to almost 10 months of war ending between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip.

Inside the Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque mourners made a line to send off Haniyeh, whose casket was briefly taken inside draped in what appeared to be a Palestinian flag as angry chants broke out.

The temperatures soared to 44.5 degrees Celsius (112 Fahrenheit), leaving many more outside, kneeling on prayer mats as they sought spiritual sustenance inside the tents that have been set up around the holy city where Islam’s Prophet Muhammad lived and died centuries ago.

“His a symbol, his leader of resistance… people are angry,” said Taher Adel, 25 and Jordanian student living in Doha.

Only a few people, including Haniyeh’s daughter Sara who posted an online video showing her pouring water over the grave strewn with pebbles then bowing down to kiss it, were allowed at the burial.

However, most of the mourners in Doha donned scarfs featuring a hybrid motif – combining the Palestinian flag with checkered keffiyeh patterns above English lettering that said “Free Palestine”.
